The Kama Sutra goes back a long way. Based on documents from 400 BC onwards, it was compiled into its present form around 400 AD by a Hindu scholar named Vatsyayana. Although famed as a guide to sexual pleasures and techniques, the author considers the subjects of his work to be threefold – virtue, prosperity and love.
Times change a great deal in two thousand years. But human nature has perhaps not changed all that much. Moreover, as Vatsyayana states himself in his first piece of love advice, “In amorous practices, the man’s behaviour should take into account the place, the country and the moment”.
